Schools dealing with cyber bullying

Watch this video from New York Times.

"Cyber bullying isn't going to stop if someone gets suspended; it's always going to be a problem. The only way to stop cyber bullying is to shut off Facebook, Instagram, Kik...all that stuff"

If it's always going to be a problem, I think school need to educate students on how to deal with these problems on their own. Of course the school needs to intervene, but like the student said, they can only do so much.

Rapper Tyler the Creator has infamously tweeted this about cyber bullying:

While explicit and immature, it is important to recognize this type of viewpoint. Bullying exists everywhere, and people need the skills to combat it independently for times after high school is over. There is bullying in college, in the workplace, and in every community. I believe that along side programs that work to stop bullying, schools should also educate students on how to "close their eyes" and "walk away from the screen."

Although it might seem like they are ignoring the real problem, it is important to teach students in a way that will assist them in the rest of their lives.

  1. Really awesome post Billy! I agree with you, and I think bullying has always been in schools, and will unfortunately remain for sometime. Coming from someone who used to be a bully, I can say that you do it out of a) attention and b) lack of respect for yourself and c) attention. Oh, did I already say that? I meant it. Now with social media, that attention can be broadcast to a much wider audience, in a much faster way. It is scary to think that someone could make you feel bad through the ease and accessibility of an iPhone, or tablet. Bullying is absolutely wrong, and used to be able to be dealt with via a teacher or the principal. But now the victim could be bullied outside of the schools jurisdiction, thus often leaving the administrators no choice but to contact the authorities. And when the police get involve, everything gets far more complicated. I think Tyler the Creator is just fucking around here, probably high as shit. Cyber bullying, or any sort of bullying, is wrong yet difficult to stop.
